Six Degrees Emergence Sync

When we first wrote programs, they had a beginning and an end. Most of the computer systems with which we deal nowadays are more-or-less continuously operating, especially in networked computer systems such as the Internet. Today we have to think quite differently about how connected systems operate. These four books—Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age, by Duncan J. Watts; Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software, by Steven Johnson; Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order, by Steven Strogatz; and Linked, by Albert-László Barabási—represent some of the literature that delves into how lots of small, simple components can combine to create extremely powerful, yet adaptable, organized systems, and each draws on examples from different disciplines.
