Insights | Frontiers | Internet ArchitectureIn its July 1945 issue, The Atlantic published an article by Vannevar Bush entitled As We May Think. Bush was the Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development in the United States during the Second World War; in this article he challenges the scientific community to exchange its wartime preoccupation with physical power for a new focus on the powers of the mind. His concept of an "infostructure" anticipates (one hesitates to say "predicts") both the Internet and the World Wide Web. For those of us who live "on the net" today, this is where it all started. Many people have tried to tell the story of the Internet, but if you want to know what really happened, read A Brief History of the Internet, written by the people who made it: Barry Leiner, Vint Cerf, Dave Clark, Bob Kahn, Leonard Kleinrock, Dan Lynch, Jon Postel, Larry Roberts, and Steve Wolff. |
